My positon is often less advertised on campus but it is just as important. A lot of times students don’t know their rights or privileges that they have at the university and I want to encourage everyone to come talk to me any time they have a question about a course, professor, program, or anything in between. I would love to get to know as many of you as possible and try to help you out any way I can.
HOMETOWN: Dartmouth, Nova Scotia
YEAR OF STUDY: 1st year of education/5th year at Acadia
PROGRAM OF STUDY: Education
WHAT I DO: I am in Vice-President Academic for the ASU. Within the University, I am the Chair of the Academic Affairs Committee and also a representative on the Senate, ensuring that the student voice is heard. My job is to make sure that students are able to get the most out of their university education and to be a great resource when making academic decisions. At the provincial level, I am a member of the Board of Directors for Students Nova Scotia, an advocacy group for post-secondary students. The group ensures that students are able to have a voice in government decisions. Finally, I am also involved in the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations which is a federal advocacy group for post-secondary students (very similar to Students NS but on a larger, federal scale).
WHAT I CAN DO TO HELP YOU: I believe that every student can be successful and should be given the opportunities to do so. In saying that, I want to ensure that all Acadia students are given the chance to put their best foot forward in their education by providing them with the opportunities they need. Obviously this will differ from student to student and I want to make each student’s experience with me a personal one. In order to help all students get the most from their education, I would love to hear from as many of them as possible so that I can bring forth ideas and areas of improvement at the university by being a liaison between the student body and the university. I am also able to help with one-on-one academic advice whether it involves issues in your courses, thoughts of a program change, or any other questions you may have.
MY GOALS FOR THE YEAR: I want to make the university experience at Acadia more accessible to students regardless of their positon whether it be related to finances, mental health, learning disabilities, or any other situations that may arise. Overall, I would like to improve the online course structure so that it falls within the Academic Calendar and so that students don’t have to incur extra charges when planning to take an online course during the fall or winter semester. From an advocacy perspective, I want to make sure that all students are given the opportunity to make an informed voting decision in the upcoming Federal Election.
FUN FACT ABOUT ME: I love figure skating. I am an avid fan, active skater, and coach for the Wolfville Skating Club.
